I can't take credit for this. A liberal told me not to take my Social Security and Medicare. I finally agreed, but what of the money I paid in? I'll take the check plus interest.

Me too, and I'll take some of the money to clear some bills and fix some things on the car and put the rest into my retirement and I would take what was going to SS and Medicare each month and put that in a private retirement plan.

I really need some of the money that I've been paying all these decades but the government makes it very hard to get what you've worked for and deserve. I need disability and have paid for it for years but instead of giving me my money back they say that I don't need it and that I'm really healthy and pain free. I wish someone would explain that to my aging, aching body.

Sorry Linda. The courts have ruled that you do not have a"right" to your SS check. The government can decide to change your check or stop sending it to you at any time.

And that Obama administration is bashing insurance companies? The last time I looked, insurance contracts were enforceable in court.

Linda, starting in 1981 through 2008, which party had the most power to control spending? Which party had the Presidency for 22 of those years? Which party controlled Congress for most of that time? And when the Democrats had control of Congress and the Republicans the Presidency, how many Presidential vetoes did Congress override?

The conclusion must be that the Republicans were responsible for the overwhelming majority of the debt and that they were complicit in using the Social Security funds for general expenditures.

Of course, if the Democrats had been in power all that time they would have been the ones being bought off by the powerful corporations and wealthy contributors and influenced by the lobbyists. It's just that they were not in power and the Republicans were. Money corrupts almost everyone.

Not sure I agree with your assessment of the issue. Especially since the Federal Government currently OWES the Social Security Trust Fund $2.7 Trillion dollars.
I believe repayment of this borrowed money should come first.

I just completed an article of my own called: Saving Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid

Hopefully, it may help in discussing this topic.
